On this week’s radar we find a North Carolina House Republican majority proactively fulfilling its responsibility to its constituents. In voting for a final, decisive override of a veto by Democrat Gov. Roy Cooper, House Republicans voted 72-46 to authorize a Senate bill — previously vetoed and overridden — that allocates $227 million for disaster relief in western North Carolina. The bill also restrains the state’s Attorney General from participating in legal arguments that would seek to invalidate laws passed by the General Assembly. The bill also moves appointment power related to seats on the State Board of Elections to the office of the state auditor while removing that power from the Governor. Republican Dave Boliek was elected state auditor in November.
Outgoing N.C. congressman Dan Bishop (NC-08), who was defeated in the race for state attorney general, is Donald Trump’s choice to become deputy budget director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
Governor-elect Josh Stein, in an interview with ABC News, declined to commit to cooperation with the incoming Trump administration on mass deportation of immigrants living in the state illegally. “(For) folks who are law-abiding, deporting them is not a priority at all.” Stein seems to be confused about their status. Individuals entering the U.S without documentation are breaking our laws.
